Johnson Claims Title in Spring Opener at Myrtle Beach
Javan Johnson opened the 2023 spring season in style for the No. 10 Taylor men's golf program, topping the field at the Showdown at the Legends and helping the Trojans to a third-place team finish.
Johnson fired rounds of 71, 68 and 77 to tie for first with a total of 216 at the two-day event. The senior's second-round score of 68 was the lowest 18-hole score of the tournament for any individual and catapulted Johnson to the top of the leaderboard. The 54 holes of work were not quite enough however, as Johnson needed a four-hole playoff to secure the medalist honors.
Johnson's even-par showing included one eagle, 11 birdies and 30 pars, while he led the field in play on par-fours and ranked third on par-fives.
The performance helped Taylor finish third overall in the 11-team field at plus-30. TU trailed No. 3 Lindsey Wilson (plus-15) and Marian (plus-26) in the field and topped No. 8 Cumberlands by eight strokes.
The Trojans rated second in the field in par-fours and par-fives but performed near the bottom of the pack on par-threes, which ultimately cost them a chance at the title.
While Johnson was the lone Trojan to finish among the top-15, Adam Kasitz climbed to 16th with a 71 in his final round, with Noah Ross and Drew Pickering tying for 23rd.
Taylor is set to return to action at the Garn Championship in Nicholasville, Kentucky on March 27 and 28.
