Employee Spotlight Cory Rolph
City of Marion Transportation Mechanic Cory Rolph is saving the City of Marion thousands of dollars as a certified Commercial Driver’s License Trainer for fellow employees.
Rolph was hired in 2018 as a part-time Bus Driver for Marion Transit, then became a full-time Relief Driver before switching gears to Mechanic in the summer of 2022.
Aside from Rolph filling big shoes in serving needs mechanically for the Transportation Department, he recently became certified as a CDL trainer. What normally would cost $1,500 per person, Rolph covers in-house for free. He has successfully trained one employee with two more going through the process.
Rolph balances his schedule each week to ensure he fulfills his duties as the City Mechanic while setting aside the proper time to train his fellow employees when needed.
Transportation Director Jeff Edwards had been searching for answers regarding CDL requirements and found a way for the City to save taxpayer dollars with the assistance of Kim Marshall of Marion Community Schools. Marshall then helped train and register Rolph.
Rolph expressed gratitude for the opportunity to get certified and train others. “A lot of other employees could do it. I’m lucky that I’m the one Jeff picked.”
Edwards said Rolph was chosen for his initiative and work ethic, and that he does a remarkable job in his new role.
