The Kokomo Parks & Recreation Department will be delaying the opening of Kokomo Beach by one weekend for the 2022 season.  The predicted weather for this weekend as well as a shortage of lifeguards both contributed to the delay.

A substantial decrease in lifeguard applicants is a cause for concern.  “We only had about 60% of the total number of needed lifeguards apply & try-out this year. We typically hire 60-65 lifeguards each year, but this year we had just over 35 lifeguards come out this year,” stated Torrey Roe; Park Superintendent.  The substantial decrease in the number of lifeguards could lead to an altered schedule for the 2022 season.

In an effort to hire additional lifeguards, the city of Kokomo has implemented an increase in the salary and will be conducting an additional lifeguard try-out.  Following the additional try-out on Thursday, more information will be provided on the 2022 schedule.  “We are looking into several options on how to safely staff Kokomo Beach for the summer and keep the gates open as much as possible.  Once we have a confirmed number of lifeguards, we will confirm a schedule and get it out to the public as soon as possible.  Ensuring our patron’s safety and maximizing the time we are open is our top priority,” Roe stated.
