City Of Kokomo Code Enforcement Sends Out First High Grass Notices Of 2022
The arrival of spring has brought back flowers, grass and everything green. It has also set the City of Kokomo’s Inspection Services to work addressing problem yards.
City ordinance 95.01(G) requires property owners to keep properties free of grass, weeds and other rank vegetation taller than eight inches. Once a property is identified as having vegetation that is too tall or out of control, Inspection Services will leave a notice on the door. A dated letter is then sent to the property owner. The owner then has five days from the date of the letter to address the issue. If the issue is not resolved after six days, Inspection Services will hand it over to a contractor, who has five days to cut the grass. The contractor will measure the grass to ensure it is in violation and take before and after photos.
“We’ve already issued more than 230 letters this year,” said Inspection Services Director Jason Alexander. “We want to help people avoid being cited or fined. Most complaints come from neighbors of the overgrown properties and our department wants to work with them so the issue can be addressed.”
If you have received a notice:
You have five days to cut the grass or remove the rank vegetation.
The property owner, even if they are not the tenant, is responsible for addressing the issue.
The City of Kokomo will never offer to cut the grass for a reduced fee.
If a City of Kokomo contractor mows the grass, the property owner will be billed $250.
A lien could be placed on the property if it’s not compliant and the fee is unpaid.
